Austin Leatherman Clear Spring, MD Obituary - Cause of Death

CLEAR SPRING, MD — The Clear Spring community is in mourning following the tragic and untimely passing of Austin Leatherman, a dedicated young firefighter whose life was tragically cut short. The Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company (CSVFC) confirmed the heartbreaking news, describing the loss as a devastating blow to the department and the town he so selflessly served.

Austin Leatherman, a proud native of Clear Spring, began his journey in fire service at the remarkable young age of 13, when he joined CSVFC as a Junior Firefighter. Even then, it was clear to all who knew him that Austin possessed a rare blend of courage, compassion, and commitment to his community.

By the age of 16, Austin had advanced to a probationary firefighter position within the company. His dedication to service never wavered. At the time of his passing, Austin was actively working toward completing his Firefighter I certification and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training—two significant milestones he eagerly pursued with passion and purpose.

A Rising Star in the Fire Service

CSVFC Fire Chief Conner J. Greenlee released a solemn statement on behalf of the department:

“It is with the heaviest heart that the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company announces the untimely passing of Firefighter Austin Leatherman. Austin was more than a promising firefighter; he was a brother to many, a mentor to younger members, and a shining light in our community. His dedication, integrity, and kindness touched everyone around him. We ask the community to keep the Leatherman family in your thoughts and prayers while respecting their need for privacy during this unimaginable time.”

Firefighter Leatherman was known for his quiet strength, his steady presence on calls, and the deep sense of responsibility he carried for the safety and well-being of others. He showed a maturity beyond his years and inspired many young volunteers with his unwavering devotion.

A Community in Grief

The shock of Austin’s sudden passing has left friends, fellow firefighters, and the broader Clear Spring community grappling with grief. His death is not just a loss to the department, but a profound blow to all who knew and loved him.

CSVFC Chaplain JR Smith has been designated as the point of contact for the Leatherman family and will assist with coordinating support and upcoming service details. The department plans to hold a memorial service that will honor Austin’s life, service, and legacy—a moment for the fire family and community to come together in remembrance.

Community members have already begun leaving tributes, flowers, and handwritten messages outside the firehouse, and plans are underway for a candlelight vigil to celebrate Austin’s life and his contributions to Clear Spring.

Austin Leatherman was more than a firefighter-in-training; he was a young man with a bright future, known for his humility, sense of humor, and heart for service. Whether he was riding in the fire engine, training hard, or encouraging fellow volunteers, he did so with purpose and pride.

His legacy will live on not just in the firehouse walls, but in the lives of those he protected, served, and inspired.
